Violin Care 101
Keep your instrument in top shape with these simple care and maintenance tips for beginners.
Your violin is a delicate wooden instrument that responds to how you treat it. These simple care habits will keep it sounding beautiful.
Daily Care
- Wipe down after playing — always use a soft, dry cloth to remove rosin dust and sweat from the strings and body
- Loosen your bow — about a quarter turn after each session; the bow should relax but not be completely loose
- Store properly — keep your violin in its case when not in use, away from direct sunlight and heat sources
Weekly Care
- Check your bow hair — it should not be touching the stick when tightened; if it feels greasy, it may need re-hairing
- Inspect the bridge — make sure it is standing straight and not warping
Seasonal Care
- Humidity matters — violins prefer 40-60% relative humidity. In dry climates or winter, consider a case humidifier
- Avoid temperature shock — let your violin acclimate to room temperature for 15 minutes before playing if it has been in extreme temperatures
