Practice Tips

Building an Effective Practice Routine

Structure your practice time for maximum progress with this simple framework that works for busy adults.

A good practice routine is the single most important habit you can build as a beginner violinist. Here is a framework that works for even the busiest schedules.

The 15-Minute Foundation

  • 2 minutes — Warm up: gentle bowing on open strings
  • 5 minutes — Technical focus: scales or exercises from your lesson
  • 5 minutes — Repertoire: the piece or section you are currently learning
  • 3 minutes — Fun play: something you already know and enjoy

The 30-Minute Session

  • 3 minutes — Warm up with long bows on open strings
  • 7 minutes — Scales and technique
  • 10 minutes — New material from your lesson
  • 7 minutes — Review and polish pieces you already know
  • 3 minutes — Cool down: play something for fun

Tips for Consistency

  1. Same time, same place — attach practice to an existing habit (morning coffee, after dinner)
  2. Prepare your space — have your violin, music stand, and materials ready before you sit down
  3. Use a practice journal — tracking what you worked on keeps you accountable and shows your progress over time
